U.S. Coast Guard Certification
The U.S. Coast Guard does not "certify" any video training program. If a company claims that their video is certified, then that claim is incorrect. Coast Guard certification is limited to courses that contain an approved curriculum, an assessment of performance and/or demonstration of competence, and a monitoring capability. Videos may be based on an approved curriculum; there may even be a test given at the end of the program. However, the U.S. Coast Guard cannot be assured that the person who watched the video is the person who took the test. Nor can there be an assurance that the person who took the test did so without the assistance of anyone else. Video is a wonderful training medium, but not one that can be monitored or adequately supervised.
Maritime Training Services has worked with the Coast Guard in the development of many of our training programs. We recognize the Coast Guard cannot "certify" our videos in the same way they do a shore-based curriculum. However, we believe there is value in presenting to the international shipping community the U.S. view. For example, our U.S. Port State Control program was developed with the close assistance of the Puget Sound MSO.
