Deckhand Orientation

Prior to getting underway for the first time on a particular towing vessel, each crew member must receive a safety orientation. Workboat operators must provide hazard awareness training on threats to life, property and the environment. This includes an overview of lifesaving equipment, use of PPE, emergency procedures, environmental regulations, and personal safety measures.

  • Review lifesaving equipment and PPE, including life jackets, immersion suits, EPIRBs, and the unique dangers presented by working on deck
  • Learn the correct emergency procedures, egress routes, and what to do in the event of a fire
  • See what actions to take during a towing emergency to avoid the bight, pinch points, and snapback
